Peter Protschka Quintet
Description:
Cologne trumpet/flugelhorn player Peter Prochka's first studio album, a quintet full of respect for the jazz tradition from modern to post-bop. Half of the album is the leader, Peter. Half of the compositions are by Peter, the leader, and the other half by Rick Margitza, an American tenor saxophonist who gained popularity in the 80's playing in Miles Davis' band. The album features straight-ahead jazz that clearly pays homage to jazz giants through song titles such as "St. Sonny" and "E Jones. The label "post-bop" may not necessarily apply to this quintet. They also use distorted sounds to great effect, and use open forms and complex harmonies rather than typical post-bop. Protchka describes the ideals of his sound, "We play contemporary European straight-ahead jazz, but we never lose sight of our American heritage."'It's a very warm, lyrical sound, and you can hear our different backgrounds and influences. But we all appreciate American music very highly." On the sensual ballad M-6 and the ten-minute long M-8, one can hear the detailed and harmonious sound of five musicians who have been playing with the same members for nine years. The music is fresh and energetic, yet relaxed and casual at the same time. The music is full of mysterious charm.
