Château du Moulin Rouge is a long-established estate in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, in the Haut-Médoc, with roots that reach back to the 18th century. The property is still in family hands and is now run by the 13th generation, which gives it the kind of continuity that shows up in the glass: steady, unfussy, and confident. Its name comes from a windmill built in 1732, and the estate’s 27 hectares sit on the gravelly rises that make the Left Bank such a stronghold for Cabernet-led wine.
The 2016 is a classic Médoc blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, with a more generous Merlot presence than many wines from this part of Bordeaux. The vineyards average about 40 years of age, the fruit was hand-harvested, and the wine was aged in French oak for 12 months. The 2016 vintage itself was widely praised for its balance, structure, and freshness, which suits this estate’s traditional style very well.
It delivers genuine Left Bank character without the price tag or polish of a grand cru classé.
The 2016 vintage gives it real structure, dark fruit depth, and enough freshness to keep it moving in the glass.
The Merlot component adds flesh and drinkability, so it feels complete rather than stern.
Decant for about 30 to 60 minutes if drinking now.
Serve at cellar temperature, around 60 to 65°F.
Pair it with roast lamb, steak, duck, or anything with savory, browned edges.
