Description:

Composer Edward German was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire, England. He achieved success with stage works such as "Tom Jones" (NAXOS 8.660270) and "Merry England" (suite on 8.555171), and was so highly regarded that he is recognized as the successor to the comic opera great Arthur Sullivan, but his own creative origins were in orchestral His own creative origins were in orchestral works. He was one of the first to adopt French and Russian styles, which were not so common in England at the time, and all of his works are outstanding, especially "Norwich," which is one of the most representative symphonies of late 19th century England. The "Elegant Waltz" is a fast-paced waltz with effective use of saxophone and harp, one of the pieces in the long concert suite "Leeds. The "Welsh Rhapsody," one of Jarman's most frequently performed works, was written for the Cardiff Music Festival in 1904.
