Juilliard Quartet
Description:
The Juilliard String Quartet, formed in 1946 at the initiative of composer William Schumann by Robert Mann and other young professors at the Juilliard School, was the ensemble that defined the direction of string quartet music after World War II. Along with "Berg: Lyric Suite," this is the return of the Juilliard String Quartet's greatest masterpiece from the RCA era. This performance was much talked about at the time for its novelty in that it clearly highlights the romantic elements latent in Debussy's music and the impressionistic aspects of Ravel's music, and is said to be more substantial than the 1970 re-recording.
