Legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, who passed away in 2013, celebrates his 90th anniversary this year. This is the first commercial release of a live recording of his appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973. In July 1973, Blue Note traveled to Montreux, Switzerland to introduce the label's stars at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Produced by then-president George Butler, the live albums were all titled "Live: Cookin' with Blue Note at Montreux," and other Blue Note artists at the time, including Ronnie Foster, Marina Shaw, and Bobby Hutcherson, also released albums of the same name. In the same year, Byrd had achieved great success with his masterpiece album "Black Byrd" with the Meisel Brothers, and this live recording is a package of that momentum with a tremendous amount of passionate performance.The 10-piece band, including the Meisel Brothers and Nathan Davis, will perform "Black Bird," as well as previously unrecorded Bird originals such as "The East," "Kwami," and "Poco Mania," and Stevie Wonder's "You've Got It Bad Girl." A great cover of Stevie Wonder's "You've Got It Bad Girl" is included.
