Arias from opera masterpieces performed on Gaillard's deep resonant cello. A popular cellist who plays with a supple sensibility everything from royal repertoire to playful works that are full of ideas and wonders of direction, Gaillard's latest disc is titled "Cellopera," in which she performs famous operatic arias on the cello. Gaillard explains the inspiration for the album: "More than 20 years ago, I was in Aix-en-Provence, France, and I wanted to make an album of cello music. More than 20 years ago, I was with the harpsichordist Emmanuelle Aime as bass continuo in a production of "Don Giovanni" conducted by Daniel Harding at the Aix-en-Provence Music Festival. When one of the singers was absent from rehearsal, the solo cellist of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra played the aria "She is at peace" sung by Ottavio (tenor). It was a blessed moment for me and opened a new musical window. Of course, I have been exposed to opera since I was a child, and the singing of the great singers of the past has stayed with me. When confronted with my desire to play opera on the cello and the masterpieces of opera, I remembered Paul Klee's words, "The essence of art is not to reproduce as it is what can be seen, but to make visible what cannot be seen." and I decided to embark on this journey of pursuit and exploration.I am sure you will enjoy it."
