Tracking the transformation of Hosokawa's works over a period of about a quarter of a century - this is the commemorative 10th work in the "Sound Universe" series, which began to be released in 1987. Hosokawa is currently one of the busiest composers in the world. His "Circulating Sea," premiered by Gergiev and the Vienna Philharmonic at last year's Salzburg Festival, attracted a great deal of attention, and since September he has been invited to the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin as a researcher composer, following NONO, LIGETI, HENZE, LACHENMANN, and REEM. All of the works on this CD are performed by next mushroom promotion (nmp), a group of performers specializing in contemporary music based in the Kansai region. The name of the group is "the next generation after Cage", and the group's mission is to promote "a new way of music after Cage". To date, nmp has concentrated on performing works by Cage, Xenakis, Lachenmann, and others. nmp held a concert "Toshio Hosokawa - 50 Years of Landscape" on October 15, 2011, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his birth.The concert was a spectacular three-part performance from 2:00 to 8:30 p.m. of 15 pieces, including six Japan premieres, ranging from studies from the composer's high school days to more recent works. It is still fresh in our memory that the 5th Keizo Saji Award was presented to the composer for his uncompromising spirit of challenge. Toshio Hosokawa has full confidence in nmp's performance.
