Corsi, Giuseppe (1631-1691)
Description:
Giuseppe Corsi, also known as Cellani, was one of the most important Roman School composers of the late 17th century. After studying under Giacomo Carissimi in Rome, he worked as music director in many churches, but he was also a musician with many hardships, including being imprisoned on suspicion of having teachings contrary to the orthodox faith (Inquisition). Because of his work in important Italian churches, he is known primarily for his works for choirs, including masses, motets, and oratorios. This recording features secular cantatas for solo bass and bass continuo, mostly based on Greek mythology. The cantata "From the Rocks of Sicily" is a masterpiece that uses bold dissonances to create a vivid and realistic soundscape. The performance is by Mauro Borgioni, one of the hottest young baritones in the world today, with a beautiful singing voice. As a specialist in ancient music, many artists have competed with him.
