The Pattern
The trouser piece in the Workwear System
Trouser
Skill Level 3 / 5
1 Yard Carpenters
This pattern teaches the foundations of workwear trousers: pocket systems, waistband construction, button fly construction, hardware placement, long seam control, topstitching, and working with heavier fabrics like duck canvas, drill, twill and denim.
The shape is calm and functional, so the fabric, fit, fading, repairs and wear patterns become the character of the garment over time. Pairs naturally with the Yard Jacket, but stands confidently on its own.
Course & Tutorials
Build-along support, in two parts
Tutorial resources cover the important areas of the build — pocket construction, utility pocket placement, hammer loop construction, waistband assembly, button fly construction, reinforcement, hardware and final finishing.

Fabric Guidance
Built for durable workwear fabrics
Designed around fabrics that hold structure, take stress and improve with use. Inside the pattern resources you'll get fabric recommendations, weight guidance, hardware notes and sourcing support.
Recommended fabrics
- Duck canvas
- Workwear canvas
- Heavy cotton drill
- Cotton twill
- Denim
- Hickory stripe for lighter workshop versions
Heavier fabrics create a structured, traditional work trouser. Slightly lighter fabrics create something easier to move in while keeping the workwear shape.

📎 Tiling Pages?
If you're printing at home on A4 or US Letter, your pages need tiling and sticking together before cutting fabric. Full instructions — tiling, sticking, cutting and pre-production — are covered on the Help page.

Seam Allowance
✂️ Seam Allowance Box
- Every Roughcut pattern (except a few early patterns like the Ushanka Cap and Duffle Bag) already has 1/4" seam allowance built in
-
Cut directly on the pattern line — no need to add anything
- Hems, pockets, flat-felled seams and hardware areas may use different allowances — these are stated in the tutorial
- If unsure, refer to the tutorial before cutting
⚠ First Build? Read This First
- Buy a little extra fabric — mistakes happen while learning, and there's no room for re-cutting otherwise
- Don't cut your final fabric until your test square is correct
- Watch the relevant tutorial before cutting into good fabric
- Use scrap or cheap test fabric to practise tricky steps if unsure
