Description:
Trovatore (meaning "The Bard") is one of the most popular of Verdi's operas. Originally a play by the Spanish playwright Gutierrez, it was a stage play featuring a love story between a man and a woman and a medieval knight story with episodes such as a gypsy curse. Verdi, intrigued by the play, commissioned the popular writer Cammarano to write the script, but Cammarano died in mid-writing, and the young poet Valdare completed the rest of the play. Verdi wrote the entire work in almost a month, and it was premiered at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on January 19, 1853. The opera was a great success and was performed in many other parts of the world. The story is about Manrico, a young minstrel, Leonora, who loves him, and Count Luna, who has feelings for Leonora. Oehlen's familiar conducting and the performance of this opera, which revolves around an old woman, Azucena, who holds an important key to the story, are performed in a single breath. The lead role of Manrico is sung by the tenor Pretti, who made his debut in 2006 and has been enchanting the world since then. In the third act, he sang "Behold the terrible fire" with his beautiful voice. Shkosa's terrific singing as Azucena is also a must-see. Francisco Negrin's simple staging is extremely elegant, and together with the costumes and lighting, conveys a true human drama. Naxos Japan
