In the mid-1970s, military aircraft designers became aware of stealth capabilities and began experimenting with how such stealth features could be incorporated into aircraft designs. Although the program for a new strategic bomber with stealth capabilities had been launched in 1979, the first B-2, with its revolutionary design, was not unveiled to the public until 1988. Testing of the subsonic flying wing began the following year. The "Spirit of Arizona" was the second of six test aircraft and first flew on October 19, 1990. Although the first B-2 Spirits entered operational service in 1994, the test program, which continuously evaluated new B-2 capabilities, was not completed until 1997. All six test aircraft, including the "Spirit of Arizona," were then brought up to production standard and handed over to the 509th Bomber Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.
