This is the second recording of Liszt's "Pilgrim's Progress" by Medjieva, the fifth in a series of recordings commemorating the 20th anniversary of Medjieva's concert debut in Japan. The music of "Year 2 "Italia"" expresses Liszt's impressions of the art and literature of Michelangelo, Raphael, Dante, Petrarch, and others with whom he became familiar during his stay in Italy from 1837 to 1839. It is a wonderful work that brings to the forefront the virtuosity of the young Liszt, while at the same time celebrating deep lyricism and spirituality. Medjieva's sincere approach to the work reveals its new appeal, as she polishes every detail. Her performance of "Venice and Naples," the supplemental work, is a delight, full of dramatic expression. This is a piece full of pianistic charm.
