From the Artist
I had been asked to contribute a photograph to an exhibition that addressed the issue of whether or not women who were poor had a right to bear children in this country. Soon after, I saw an interview of Abbey Lincoln in the New York Times where she discussed her music. When asked why she wrote lyrics about women, she said "...women bring the people...."These words stuck with me. Having and raising babies is work, it's labor that is not included in the economic statistics, in the gross national product, in the growth measurements of the economy. It is labor that does not count and women who have babies are discounted as workers, as laborers who contribute to the economy, and as having full worth as a citizen of the society. They do the work that provides the workers. Nations rise and fall throughout history.
