Planned as a project under the discount retailer Seiyu, MUJI made its debut in 1980, embodying its brand philosophy in the names "Muin" (無印: unstamped) and "Ryohin" (良品: good quality). Since initially introducing about 40 items, MUJI now handles over 7,000 products and is proving that a brand can sell the aesthetics of life by expanding its interest into the housing business.
