Faith Marlowe, the daughter of a weak-willed and ineffective politician and an uncouth gold-digger, is whisked away for a European education after her parents separate. Young and inexperienced, she meets and marries Rudolf, a German baron of a very distinguished German family and is plunged into the whirlpool of diplomatic life.
