This is the second Bell and Hammer game (aka Whitehorse, and in German Glocke und Hammer or Schimmel) that I've found--and as with the first set I had, this one sold me on the box alone. (Such good all caps gold lettering on the slide lid of the box, making it feel to me as if top secret information about the Russians might be housed inside, and then that gorgeous yellow panted border.) This set, fourth quarter 19th century I would guess, includes six extra cards in addition to the complete set of 5 colored ones. Plus original instructions, wooden gavel, nice bunch of bone betting chips, and a near complete set of dice (six of them, each blank on all but one side, the marked sides featuring a bell on one, hammer on another, and dots on the rest marking 2, 4, 5 and 6; the 1 and 3 are missing. (Others could be substituted in order to play--I'd just take a couple of small regular dice and mark the 1 and 3 sides with a dab of paint, treating the other sides as blank, or one could go as far as to white out the other sides!)

Bell and Hammer was popular in Europe into the early 20th century. It is a gambling game, with an initial throw of the dice determining the "auctioneer," who then auctions off the five different cards to the other players, who subsequently accumulate points/counters based on rolls of the dice in relation to the cards they own.

Box 6 3/8" x 4 1/2" x 1 1/2". As noted, two dice are missing from what should be a set of eight, reflected in my price--these sets are fairly rare and tend to be fairly preciously priced! Easy to substitute in order to play. Otherwise complete and all components in very good condition, with six extra cards in addition to the complete set. One split near one end on the bottom of box, stable and box remains sound, not presenting any issues.
