The 24th Infantry Regiment, a Buffalo Soldier regiment, was stationed at Camp Furlong, near Columbus, New Mexico, from 1916 to 1922. This unit played a significant role in border security operations during that period, including skirmishes with Mexican revolutionaries. The 24th Infantry, composed of African American soldiers, faced racial prejudice while serving on the border and later at Fort Benning, Georgia.
