Nicola Mason is a contemporary, New South Wales-based artist who works predominantly in the genres of still life and landscape. Through her works, Mason often focuses on the intersection of domestic and ecological themes, using her background in nature conversation to inform her artistic perspective. The resulting paintings are immediately atmospheric, each work an intimate documentation of place as the artist experiences it.

In ‘Kitchen Greens II’, Mason composes a still life scene of a house plant on a kitchen bench. This work is instantly immersive, with her inclusion of small, everyday details transporting the viewer into the warm and vibrant atmosphere of the artist’s domestic space. This work appears as an honest reflection of Mason’s personal perspective.

This work was created for the exhibition ‘Conversations with Clarice Beckett’, a group show held at the Orange Regional Art Museum, supported by the National Gallery of Australia. In this series, the artist responded to Beckett’s intertwined personal life and artistic career by creating works that intimately revealed her domestic life. Often small in size, and painted on repurposed board and cornflake packaging, each of these paintings is a minute glimpse into Mason’s interior world.

Mason has exhibited regularly throughout Australia, both in solo and group exhibitions. She has been included in numerous national art prizes, including the Portia Geach Memorial Prize, the Calleen Art Award, and the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Recently, Mason was selected as a finalist for the Wynne Prize for 2026, and her landscape work is currently exhibiting at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
