Chevron beads were invented in the late 1400s by Maria Valovere on the island of Murano, Italy. While Venetian bead-making techniques draw from ancient methods, Chevron is a uniquely Venetian innovation. Chevron beads can have up to ten layers, with blue being the most common color. Red, green, and black Chevrons are particularly rare. This technique later spread to the Netherlands. The term "Chevron" means "zigzag," and these beads are also known as Star Beads or Rosetta Beads.
