Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908)
Description:
Dodon, the king of a fictional country, has recently grown tired of ruling the country, probably due to the presence of two dismal princes and a dispute with his minister, Polkan, who is against everything. However, King Dodon, pained by signs of a foreign invasion, finally decides to trust the words of a dubious astrologer and proceed to direct the country entirely according to the omens of the "golden cock"... Rimsky=Korsakov's last opera, "The Golden Cock," based on Pushkin's original story, was not allowed to premiere because it was clearly a satirical story critical of the imperial Russia of the time, and after some twists and turns, Rimsky=Korsakov had already passed away by the time it premiered at the Solodovnikov Theater. In "The Golden Cock," staged at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in 2016, director Laurent Pelly emphasizes the work's modernity and dramatic imagination, exploring the "universal humanity" underlying the macabre and absurd story. The Golden Cock, the key to the story, was danced by the dancers, giving it a strong presence. Alain Altinoglu is a conductor of note, born in 1975. He shows a strong affinity for Russian works, bringing out colorful sounds from the orchestra and enhancing the singing of the singers. Naxos Japan
