John Wilson and the "Sinfonia of London" continue to make a great impression! John Wilson is a conductor, arranger, and specialist in light music and American music, who has built a formidable reputation with Chandos for his orchestral works by Richard Rodney Bennett, Copland, and Eric Coates." The "Sinfonia of London" was founded in 1955 as a specialized orchestra for film music and recording sessions, and has its name credited on over 300 films and numerous recordings, but in 2018 John Wilson reunited the group. Its recordings of Korngold (CHSA5220), French works (CHSA5252), and Respighi (CHSA5261) have all been selected as "special selections" by both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine (the domestic edition of RCHSA5261 was also selected by Record Arts) and are available in the UK as The RCHSA5261 has been selected as a "Special Recording" by both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine.The fourth orchestral recording by John Wilson and the new "Sinfonia of London" follows in the footsteps of Elgar and Vaughan Williams with a collection of early 20th century British string orchestra works. With the exception of Bridge's "Lamentations," composed during World War I, all three works are from the 1930s, including Britten's Variations on a Theme by his teacher Bridge (from Three Pastoral Songs No. 2 for String Quartet), L. Berklee's Serenade for Strings, written while he lived with Britten, and the music for the movie The World to Come. Music for Strings," in which Bliss, who had completed the music, wanted to write "pure music," will fully complement the fresh string sounds of the Sinfonia of London, making this a must-listen program for British music fans.
