Issued in 1966, this Belgian stamp features the fossil skeleton of Iguanodon bernissartensis, one of the first nearly complete dinosaur skeletons ever discovered. The fossil was unearthed in the Bernissart coal mines in 1878 and became a major exhibit at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique), proudly referenced on the stamp. The design, in shades of green and black, highlights the scientific and paleontological heritage of Belgium. It commemorates the country’s significant contribution to early dinosaur research and museum curation.
